Volksgarten garden is one of the most suitable locations to while a summer’s day away and barbecue. It’s heterogenous and lively flair is unique in Cologne: students and children scrimmage next to Bongo drummers and Frisbee players, and some always practice soccer. Children’s playground, pedalo hire, beer gardens, and restaurants make the grounds attractive for family excursions too.
Behind high walls lies the old "Orangerie" with two attached glass houses. The building was given its name because frost-sensitive plants were stored there after the Second World War. Today, concerts, films and plays are performed in the Orangery with its unmistakable ambience.
The Volksgarten covers around 14 hectare. Its outer limits are Sachsenring in the north and Vorgebirgswall in the south. Well worth seeing are also the remains of the Lünette and the former Fort Paul which belonged to a Prussian fortress.
