The Cologne Opera has found a fascinating interim venue in the listed StaatenHaus. The building, located directly at the Tanzbrunnen and east of the Rhine, is an architectural relic from the 1920s. Originally built as an extension to the Cologne Trade Fair Centre for the international exhibition "Pressa 1928", the StaatenHaus provides a historic backdrop for impressive opera performances.
The opera house on Offenbachplatz, built by architect Wilhelm Riphahn, offers over 1,300 seats and its purist elegance has provided a worthy setting for opera evenings in the cathedral city on the Rhine since 1957.
The Cologne stages on Offenbachplatz are currently undergoing major renovation. An opening date has not yet been set. Until then, the Staatenhaus in Cologne-Deutz will serve as an alternative venue.
An architectural reconstruction
The Second World War left clear traces on the semi-circular building, which was faithfully rebuilt in the 1950s. Today, the StaatenHaus comprises three venues: Hall 1 with 800 seats and Hall 2 with 750 seats provide generous space, while the third hall is specially dedicated to children's opera with 200 seats. The use of these halls steeped in history underlines the ambition to combine historical architecture with contemporary culture.Combining past and present
With its commitment to diversity and social inclusion, the StaatenHaus is transforming itself into a cultural epicentre of Cologne. Opera performances in this environment invite you to experience the symbiosis of architectural heritage and the modern art scene. A visit to the Cologne Opera in the StaatenHaus promises not only musical enjoyment, but also an encounter with the vibrant history and creativity of the Rhine metropolisOpera house on Offenbachplatz
