Banana art in Neu-Ehrenfeld

Thomas Baumgärtel, widely known as the Bananensprayer (banana sprayer), has left behind an impressive example of his spray painting technique with his creation in Winkelmannstraße in Neu-Ehrenfeld. The location near the overpass to Blücherpark is ideally chosen, as the neighbourhood boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene that continues to unfold in fascinating ways.

This new mural includes variations on Baumgärtel's iconic banana motif, including the federal banana eagle, the carnival banana and references to well-known personalities and styles that expand his artistic vision. Baumgärtel's inspiration for the banana motif is linked to the famous album cover designed by Andy Warhol for "The Velvet Underground and Nico".

Since 1986, Baumgärtel has been marking art locations around the world with his stylised banana, demonstrating a deep-rooted connection to the international art scene. With around 4000 such markings, his work is both far-reaching and significant, as it not only sets visual accents but also contributes to cultural discourse. Baumgärtel's art challenges and invites reflection on current social and artistic issues.
